The Garhwal Himalayas roll up to fearsome heights with vistas that make you meditate and levitate.
But snug in the rugged mountains are also bugyals or alpine meadows, sleepy villages and interminable
chai shops, which help you get your breath back.
Garhwal is full of the stuff that excites travellers, trekkers and friends of the environment.
For instance, rivers. This is where the mighty Ganga spurts out of ice and where the Yamuna puts in
her first appearance. The Alaknanda emerges from the same glacial plateau as the Ganga. There's the
Mandakini and a thousand smaller streams - that are sometimes much more fun.
The lakes are awesome, sitting high up mirroring snow peaks.
Down in the forests, of Chilla, Rajaji and Corbett National Parks, you can have your fill of elephants,
deer, birds, and maybe leopard and tiger.
You can also see people if you want. From different cultures. Always willing to teach you a step of
the local dance when helped by the local brew.
And you can discover legends. In every river, mountain, temple and lake.
